St. Mary’s Church
Refurbishment of a small cruciform post-Emancipation church with later Harry Clarke Studio stained glass windows. The Client’s brief was to carry out a comprehensive refurbishment of this very attractive small church in the centre of Castle gregory village. The works were preceded by a comprehensive condition survey and conservation report. The design solution included the complete re-roofing of the building, the replacement of inappropriate cement external render with lime render, and reordering of the internal pews to introduce side aisles. Modern services including heating, lighting and electrical cabling were sensitively introduced. The sacristy, to the rear of the church, was extended with a contemporary porch of limestone and glass construction. The internal decorative scheme was based on surviving paint samples found within the church.
