St. Mary's Graveyard, Kilkenny

The historic St. Mary's Graveyard, (off High Street), Kilkenny, reopened to the Public on Friday, 8th. June 2012. Officially opened by Mayor David Fitzgerald, the gates to the grounds of the former Church of Ireland premises are now open daily. Michael O'Boyle was Conservation Architect for this project with funding assistance from the Heritage Council. The project involved the introduction of a pathway to the graveyard, together with the opening up of two previously closed gate openings in the stone rubble boundary wall to the church grounds. The south gate dates from the last 16th. Century and includes an ashlar stone hood moulding, together with stone rubble jambs. During the course of the work, excavations at the threshold of the gate revealed the existence of previously unknown medieval cobble paving (c.14th. Century). This paving was conserved insitu and incorporated into the presentation of the gate.
